Thursday, March 11, 6:04 p.m., 17th Avenue N.W. Officers were on patrol when they spotted a verbal disturbance in the 5500 block of 17th Ave NW. They conducted a u-turn and observed the victim, a transient female, walking northbound on the west sidewalk. Victim was walking toward the male suspect as he was backing up. They were in an obvious verbal disturbance, but officers could not hear what was being said. As victim approached the suspect, suspect did a push kick to victim's midsection and also threw a beer can at her. He followed this up with a punch to the victim's left eye, after which the victim fell immediately to the ground. Officers separated the two and both were questioned. Victim declined medical attention, but had a red mark and some swelling below her left eye. She was slightly intoxicated but gave the following account: she stated that both she and the suspect are homeless, and suspect often harasses her as she is friends with his ex-girlfriend. When he saw her today he began harassing her, and she finally told him to leave her alone. She said she was walking toward him to get him to leave when the assault occurred. Suspect stated he knew the victim and she often stayed the night in his van. He said he has helped her out in the past by giving her money, but had refused to give her any today. He stated he was verbally assaulted and was trying to get away
