Reader of the Week
Reader Profile - Rosemary Otero
Rosemary Otero is a barista at Zeitgeist Coffee in Pioneer Square. She also works part-time on album production projects for local record label Light in the Attic. Working for Zeitgeist is a great fit because of her undying love for coffee. Another perk: “I love my co-workers and my boss Bryan (he is one of my heroes.)”
At Light in the Attic she gets to meet accomplished and admirable musicians from the ’60s and 70s. Her favorite hobbies are being a DJ and record-collecting. She gets great pleasure from searching through record stores for treasures, and then playing them for people.
“The coolest record I own is an original copy of ‘Dreamin’ Wild,’ by Donnie and Joe Emerson that is autographed by both of them, too!”
I was very new to selling Real Change and timid when Rosemary approached me. She offered to buy me a beverage. Her kind gesture sparked an ongoing friendship.
Many conversations later I can say that her passion for all things music is obvious. I hadn’t seen her for a few days, and when I asked her where she had been she told me she went to New York City to see the Rolling Stones.
Let’s hear a bit more about Rosemary.
How long have you been reading Real Change?
About six years.
Do you think there is a solution to ending homelessness in our own City of Seattle?
I believe we need more government funding for low-income housing, and I also think that we need to provide more opportunities to help people who are struggling with mental illness and/or drug addiction.
Who is your favorite historical figure and why?
My favorite historical figure is Woody Guthrie, because his music defined the feelings of the people in America during the Great Depression, and he truly portrayed the struggles of the working class through timeless, beautiful songs.
What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
My favorite guilty pleasure would have to be listening to new country music. I love Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan.
Do you have a favorite motto, quote or inspirational mantra that you live by?
I love so many quotes by Hunter S. Thompson, but my favorite is: “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I used to get grand champion awards playing horseshoes at county fairs.
Describe your perfect Sunday.
My perfect Sunday would include going to the Ballard Farmers Market with my best friend Jerome, then record shopping at Sonic Boom, and then enjoying family dinner at my friends Leesa and Milky’s house. Any day that involves relaxing and fun times with my friends is a perfect day to me.
If you were a rock star or musician who would you be?
Nick Cave. He is the most dynamic performer I’ve ever seen live, and even after numerous decades he is still putting out unbelievable albums. I would love to have that kind of enduring creativity and showmanship.
CommentsI liked this article about Rosemary, she said some things that made me feel good. I think she should have her own column in this publication. It could be called Rosemary rolls on Columbia. Can we get more music ideas from her? Peace to all, Marko T. I agree with Marko. Rosemary Rolls would get heavy accolades from all who admire this radical babe. It would also help us learn about music that matters! Wow, reading this article reminds me of how cool this lady truly is. Rosemary is wonderful. For more years now than I can remember, she has made me smile... she's a fully awesome human being and she's an encyclopedia of music knowledge. How cool... Real Change rocks!
