A touching tribute
Famed jazz singer Ernestine Anderson, who grew up in the Central District, has received a number of honors in her life, including four Grammy nominations. But on Feb. 8, Anderson, 84, received an honor that brought her to tears: the opening of Ernestine Anderson Place. A new housing complex operated by the Low Income Housing Institute, the facility at 2010 S. Jackson St. will provide 45 units of permanent housing and 15 units of low-income housing for homeless seniors. Above, Special Project Manager for Ernestine Anderson Place Zena Dodson comforts Anderson, who cries at seeing her name on the building.
