Incumbent Reuven Carlyle, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Leslie Klein for District 36, Position 1.

Carlyle was elected in 2008 to the job of representing the 36th, which includes Queen Anne, Ballard and Magnolia.

Carlyle is vice chair of the Higher Education Committee and sits on the Technology, Energy and Communications Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. Among his accomplishments as a legislator, Carlyle touts HB 2337, which makes it possible for schools to use money-saving digital textbooks, and HB 2554, which extends and funds scholarships for foster youth.

Klein, a Republican, lists his elected experience as 12 years as a Precinct Committee Officer for the 36th District Republicans. He has positioned himself as an anti-establishment candidate and told The Stranger he is running “because of the current astrological alignment.”
