Bill Gates, Sr. and national experts agree: Washington State’s regressive tax system hurts the middle class and low income folks and fails to provide the stable revenue we need to fund priorities like education and healthcare. But we can change that with I-1098.

Our tax system is the shame of the country. Washington’s tax system ranks dead last

The comment posted before mine is an example of how some Americans have entered into a frenzied “fight or flight” mode in respect to immigration. They have forgotten that almost all of us were new to the country once (the name Gilliland sounds like it might once have been French) and that America has always been the nation that people could come to if they wanted to break free of religious restraints, class system restraints, cultural restraints.  Immigration is Diversity, and Diversity is Energy, Inventiveness, Strength.

The comment posted before mine also doesn’‘t comment on Pramila Jayapal’s excellent article explaining Initiative 1098.  1098 is not to be confused with “No on 1092,” the insurance industry initiative. We should vote “Yes on 1098” because 1098 will help our state begin to correct our unbalanced tax system. Jayapal’s article explains in clear terms how 1098 will decrease property tax for a great majority of Washingtonians and eliminate the B&O tax for most small businesses.  The wealthiest people in our state will be required to pay an income tax for the first time.  If I were wealthy, I’d want to pay 1098’s income tax because I believe in the role of government to help support our society. Society makes the wealth of the wealthiest possible; the wealthy need to support the society that supports them.  It’s basic human common sense, basic human compassion.
