Real Change is looking for responsible, committed people to help us fulfill our mission of organizing, educating, and building alliances to create solutions to homelessness and poverty. We exist to provide a voice to poor people in our community, and rely on volunteers and interns to keep the paper and our other programs operational.

Currently Hiring:
Community Organizer

Real Change exists to provide opportunity and a voice for low-income and homeless people while taking action for economic, social and racial justice.

The Community Organizer is a part-time (16 hours per week) nonexempt position at Real Change reporting to the Advocacy Program Manager. This position works to mobilize the Real Change community of vendors, supporters and readers to advocate and take action for economic justice.


Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
Community Organizing and Outreach (50%)
  • Engage Real Change vendors, volunteers, readers and the broader community in advocacy opportunities and organizing campaigns
  • Mobilize Real Change vendors to take action; develop leadership of vendors
  • Recruit vendors and community members to participate in Real Change’s advocacy and organizing work
  • Assist in coordinating activities and regular meetings of the Real Change Vendor Organizing Committee; plan meetings, events, and trainings
  • Perform outreach to Real Change vendors and develop outreach strategies that build on vendor-reader relationships
  • Create outreach materials and promote upcoming events
  • Assist in planning and coordinating public events, actions, and social activities
  • Attend community and partner meetings
  • Assist with legislative advocacy efforts and voter registration and education
  • Assist in recruiting and supervising Real Change Vendor Organizing Interns

    Communications and Administration (50%)
  • Build Real Change advocacy and organizing base through regular communications (e.g. face-to-face conversation, phone, email, fliers, and text) and through building personal relationships
  • Prepare and deliver announcements to vendors every Wednesday morning during the truck unload of the new issue of Real Change; create and update office displays to announce ongoing activities each month
  • Perform various administrative tasks as needed (e.g. data entry, printing and preparing handouts, drafting meeting agendas, note-taking, ordering supplies, event set-up/clean-up, etc.)
  • Assist with other administrative tasks, as needed

    Qualifications include:
  • 1-2 years’ experience in community organizing
  • Experience working with and advocating for homeless and low income people
  • Strong public speaking, outreach, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to building relationships and developing leaders
  • Ability to work in a hectic, busy, sometimes loud workspace
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic, social and racial justice
  • Priority consideration for the position will be given to current or past Real Change vendors in good standing

    Compensation: Hourly Wage $15.

    Currently Hiring:
    Communications Specialist

    Real Change exists to provide opportunity and a voice for low-income and homeless people while taking action for economic, social and racial justice.

    The Communications Specialist begins at 30 hours, as a nonexempt position reporting to the Founding Director. The position develops and manages the communications work for the organization to ensure strategic and effective messages are presented to Real Change supporters, media, and the general public through a variety of on-line mediums.


    Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
    Media and Public Relations (30%)
  • Strategize with lead staff to develop and refine messaging and media outreach to support departmental goals
  • Support relationship-building with allied organizations and sponsors through management of ad trades, on-line visibility, and social media messaging
  • Manage overall media strategy, including development and distribution of press releases, op-eds, and letters-to-the-editor campaigns
  • Coordinate meetings for key staff and/or members media contacts

    Website and Social Media (40%)
  • Perform weekly website newspaper upload and manage reader comments
  • Maintain and update all other aspects of website as needed
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive communications plan
  • Develop and track metrics for website, social media, and email communications
  • Perform staff trainings to promote effective and on brand use of social media

    Brand development (20%)
  • Revise and maintain Real Change style guide based on existing organizational style and best practices
  • Ensure consistent visual presentation of organization in our and others’ communications
  • Develop talking points & consistent messaging regarding the Real Change and our work

    Other Duties(10%)
  • Regularly evaluate all communications efforts
  • Manage communications contracts'
  • Manage communications interns
  • Participate in staff meetings, retreats, and Board meetings as needed
  • Participate and provide leadership in communications coalition efforts as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications include:
  • Minimum of 2 years of nonprofit or equivalent communications experience
  • Demonstrated experience with Drupal and a variety of social media platforms
  • Proven record of success leading both individuals and teams
  • Some experience in journalism, preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic justice

    Compensation: Hourly Wage $16-19, DOE. Excellent benefit package, including three weeks paid vacation, medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a $600 per Full Time Equivalent annual professional development budget.

    Currently Hiring:
    Vendor Program Associate

    Real Change exists to provide opportunity and a voice for low-income and homeless people while taking action for economic, social and racial justice.

    The Program Associate is a full–time (40 hours per week), Tuesday through Saturday, non-exempt position reporting to the Vendor Program Supervisor. This position is responsible for supporting our vendors to reach their goals in selling the paper, helping Real Change expand its circulation and reach, coordinating the Homeless Speakers Bureau and collaborating with other Real Change departments.The position will be based at our headquarters in Pioneer Square.

    Over 300 vendors per month and 800 per year purchase Real Change papers and sell them at a profit. Our weekly distribution ranges from 13,000-20,000 copies per week. Most of our vendors are homeless or formerly homeless. Our program philosophy states: “We are welcoming and non-judgmental of all vendors, with the goal of helping people maximize their earnings and become integrated into the community. Real Change staff meets vendors where they are at and treats them as equals. We strive to support our vendors by focusing on their strengths while holding them accountable for their behavior.”


    Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
    Vendor Program (50%)
  • Support vendors to resolve conflicts, offer coaching, and build relationships
  • Coordinate vendor participation in Real Change events
  • Enforce Code of Conduct and disciplinary consequences
  • Conduct orientations for new vendors and help run monthly vendor meetings
  • Participate in efforts to expand circulation and reach through outreach
  • Sell papers to vendors at the sales desk when needed
  • Work collaboratively with other departments within Real Change
  • Occasional field outreach and support for vendors

    Administrative and Documentation (20%)
  • Oversee vendor club application process
  • Assist with the coordination of the Mobile App implementation
  • Maintain current records in Vendor Database, Club database, and Internal Blog
  • Participate in weekly vendor staff meetings
  • Write letters of recommendation, referral and proof of income for vendors

    Coordinate Homeless Speakers Bureau (15%)
  • Schedule speaking engagements, manage event requests, formalize agreements and payments, send invoices and evaluation forms to host organizations and create, organize and archive program documentation
  • Act as liaison to program participants and community members
  • Attend and facilitate speaking events, as needed
  • Recruit new host organizations, expand speaking and training opportunities
  • Develop and facilitate regular Homeless Speakers Bureau meetings
  • Recruit and train new speakers with Advocacy Program Manager
  • Enforce Homeless Speakers Bureau Code of Conduct as needed

    Community Response (15%)
  • Conduct community outreach via phone and e-mail concerning vendor issues
  • Serve as point person for community agencies seeking information about the Real Change Vendor Program

    Qualifications include:
  • Two years experience with homelessness or poverty (personal or professional)
  • Experience in program coordination
  • Experience in conflict management and de-escalation
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Proven experience in multi-tasking, meeting deadlines and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a hectic, busy, sometimes loud workspace
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic justice

    Compensation: Hourly Wage $15-$17, DOE. Excellent benefit package, including three weeks paid vacation, medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a $600 per Full Time Equivalent annual professional development budget.
