Real Change is looking for responsible, committed people to help us fulfill our mission of organizing, educating, and building alliances to create solutions to homelessness and poverty. We exist to provide a voice to poor people in our community, and rely on volunteers and interns to keep the paper and our other programs operational.

Vendor Services Program Supervisor

Real Change is looking for a Program Supervisor for our Vendor Services department.
The Program Supervisor is a full time, non-exempt position reporting to the Managing Director. He/she will manage a department of four people and a departmental budget of approximately $300,000. This position is responsible for supporting our vendors’ success and ensuring that we meet our circulation goals. Circulation income represents approximately 35% of Real Change’s annual budget.

Over 300 vendors per month and 800 per year purchase Real Change papers and sell them at a profit. Our weekly distribution ranges from 13,000-20,000 copies per week. Most of our vendors are homeless or formerly homeless. Our program philosophy states: “We are welcoming and non-judgmental of all vendors, with the goal of helping people maximize their earnings and become integrated into the community. Real Change staff meets vendors where they are at and treats them as equals. We strive to support our vendors by focusing on their strengths while holding them accountable for their behavior.”

The position will be based at our headquarters in Pioneer Square. The Program Supervisor will spend some time helping develop our satellite distribution efforts, currently located in Kitsap and East King Counties.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
Vendor Program (40%)
  • Meet monthly circulation targets
  • Ensure VS adheres to its program philosophy
  • Identify opportunities that help vendors increase their ability to sell the paper and meet     their goals
  • Oversee roll out of mobile app for cashless payments
  • Document vendor incidents, and notify staff when a serious vendor incident has occurred     or may occur
  • Work with IT consultant to ensure that Vendor Database is updated and relevant
  • Ensure that vendor program is adequately staffed Monday-Saturday
  • Assist with opening and closing the office when needed

    Department Supervision (30%)
  • Supervise staff consisting of Field Organizer(s), Program Coordinator, and Circulation     Specialist
  • Coordinate staffing to ensure adequate coverage during program hours. Program hours     are generally 9AM-5PM Monday – Saturday. We open at 8AM on Wednesdays and     close early at 1PM on Tuesdays.
  • Facilitate weekly vendor staff meetings
  • Design and plan semi-annual vendor staff retreats with the goal of reviewing program     goals, policies, vendor satisfaction, arrange staff trainings and program philosophy.
  • Oversee updates to the Vendor Code of Conduct, disciplinary process, and overall     policies and practices of the Vendor Program

    Expansion (20%)
  • Guide Real Change’s expansion into outlying areas of Seattle and new communities, as     per the strategic plan
  • Develop relationships with partner agencies who will serve as a satellite distribution sites     for Real Change, when appropriate
  • Provide technical assistance to partner sites that will prepare them to sell Real Change
  • Help recruit potential vendors and conduct orientations
  • Promote Real Change in new communities by talking to businesses, convening special     events, and equipping vendors with tools for visibility and publicity
  • Consider opportunities for mobile distribution

    Other Administrative Duties (10%)
  • Work with Managing Director to create annual department budget
  • Participate in bi-weekly staff retreats
  • Serve on at least one cross-departmental committee

    Qualifications include:
  • Two or more years of supervisory experience
  • Ability to work with and supervise people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Experience in conflict management and de-escalation
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Experience working with homeless and low income population
  • Ability to work in a hectic, busy, sometimes loud workspace
  • Commitment to social and economic justice
  • Past experience in sales, preferred
  • Ability to work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule preferred

    Compensation: Hourly Wage $15-$20, DOE. Excellent benefit package, including three weeks paid vacation, 95% coverage of medical and dental premium, and a $600 per Full Time Equivalent annual professional development budget.
