We wanted to send a big kudos to Real Change for featuring the recent article by Lisa Sawyer talking about her experience attending the Conference on Ending Homelessness (RC, May 17, “Real Change vendor acts and advocates at statewide homelessness conference”). Lisa is a Real Change vendor who my husband has gotten to know since he moved to his company’s downtown office on Fourth Avenue. We’ve also had the pleasure of talking with her over the past year. She’s always smiling, upbeat, professional, informed and cares deeply.
Hearing her perspective about what the conference meant to her is both heartbreaking and encouraging. Instead of being defeated by her circumstances, Lisa is standing up and having her voice heard. She also opened herself up to being vulnerable as she acted out what it was like when she first became homeless six years ago.
We really love your paper (and your vendors!) and that its stories offer a different vantage point to shift thinking a bit.
Keep up the great work and send our regards to Lisa!
