The Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) opened registration for its housing voucher lottery on Feb. 6. Those looking for affordable housing in Seattle have until Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. to apply.
The lottery has been closed since April 2015. It allows qualifying individuals and families to apply for Housing Choice Vouchers, commonly referred to as Section 8 vouchers, which put people into market-rate housing.
Residents with vouchers spend 30 percent of their income on rent. The vouchers come with maximum rent limitations and do not guarantee housing.
People with a voucher may still be rejected based on criminal history or other factors.
In the city of Seattle, however, no landlord can lawfully deny potential tenants housing based on the fact that they use a voucher to cover rent.
