The Homeless Remembrance Project, a community effort to memorialize homeless people who have died outside, received an award from the city for outstanding community stewardship. On Dec. 9, close to a dozen people involved with the Homeless Remembrance Project accepted a 2014 Denny Award, an honor bestowed by Seattle Parks and Recreation. The award recognizes individuals, businesses or organizations that have made “an outstanding and exemplary contribution” to regional parks. The project was one of nine individuals or organizations to receive this year’s award. The push to create the Homeless Remembrance Project began in 2003 and efforts have spawned two memorials: the “Tree of Life,” above, a bronze sculpture located in Victor Steinbrueck Park; and “Leaves of Remembrance,” leaf-shaped plaques embedded in sidewalks throughout the city, each leaf bearing the name of a homeless person who has died. Along with the award, project organizers received $500.
