The Aug. 13 Real Change article “Out of Sight” states that Plymouth Church eliminated its 50-bed shelter for women due to sanctuary renovations. To clarify: Plymouth partners with WHEEL (Women’s Housing Equality & Enhancement) to provide emergency winter shelter for women.
The shelter normally opens Oct. 1 and closes at the end of March. Yes, Plymouth is in the midst of renovations, resulting in a delay, rather than the elimination, of the shelter’s re-opening. We have every expectation for the shelter to open again in early 2015. Meanwhile, WHEEL is having conversations with another area church to provide housing and help close the gap.
Did you know Plymouth Church founded Plymouth Housing Group?
Today the group provides permanent housing for more than 1,000 individuals. In addition, Plymouth Church founded and supports Plymouth Healing Communities, which currently provides housing for 44 mentally ill and formerly homeless individuals. In 2011, Mary’s Place (a shelter for women, children and families) was the recipient of Plymouth’s $100,000 change grant.
In 2013, Mary’s Place received an additional $40,000 from Plymouth Church to help realize the opening of its emergency family shelter at Third and Bell. These efforts and more receive hands-on support of Plymouth members.
Along with direct service, Plymouth Church is actively involved in advocating and addressing root causes of homelessness and public policies that perpetuate injustice.
In fall 2011, I moved from Connecticut to be Plymouth’s senior pastor.
Still a relatively new senior pastor, I am inspired and honored to serve this vibrant congregation that “walks the walk.”
