Members of Women in Black held a silent vigil in front of the Seattle Justice Center Aug. 13. The vigil honored eight homeless people who have died outside or by violence in King County this summer, including Larry Flynn, a 42-year-old homeless man. Two Seattle police officers shot Flynn multiple times at Gas Works Park early in the morning July 30 in response to a call from a security guard who reported an illegal camp fire. SPD officers said Flynn brandished a broken glass bottle at officers. Officers used Tasers on Flynn twice, but they had no effect, according to police. Civil rights groups are calling for an investigation into the shooting. The vigil that honored Flynn was also dedicated to four other homeless people who died in housing or shelter. Women in Black also stood for Rebecca Scollard, Byron King, Cornelio Lopez, Kennedy Valdehueza, Patrick Salerno, Gilbert Condon and Real Change vendor David Purnell. On the sidewalk in the picture’s foreground are Leaves of Remembrance, brass plaques that bear the names of homeless people who have died outside in King County.
