Real Change Community Organizer Alex Becker has been appointed to the Seattle Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
Established in 1963, SHRC advocates for justice and equal opportunity, advises the city of Seattle on human rights issues and collaborates with the public and private sectors in order to educate them on methods to prevent and eliminate discrimination citywide.
As commissioner, Becker will serve a two-year, unpaid term working to promote human rights for the residents of Seattle and facilitate the prevention and elimination of discrimination. There are currently 16 commissioners from a range of backgrounds, including law, social justice advocacy and academia.
A graduate of The Evergreen State College, Becker has since 2005 worked and volunteered with nonprofit and public service organizations in Washington that address housing and homelessness policy, criminal justice reform, environmental health, racial and economic justice and labor rights.
SHRC consults with and makes recommendations concerning the development of programs that promote equality and justice.
It works with the Director of the Office for Civil Rights to end discrimination based upon race, religion, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation, political ideology, ancestry, age, marital and parental status, disability, Section 8 and retaliation.
SHRC conducts appeals and holds hearings to identify and deal with acts of discrimination and assist in resolving racial tensions in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations.
