Incumbent Eileen Cody, who has served as state representative for District 34, Position 1, since 2002, faces challenger William Giammarese. Both are Democrats.
Cody, a registered nurse, chairs the Health and Wellness Committee. She sponsored several bills that passed that will enable the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act in Washington state.
Giammarese, who has no prior elected experience, has said he is running because he believes elections should be competitive, and voters should be offered a choice.
His platform includes bolstering state revenue with “common sense changes” to the tax code, such as eliminating the sales tax exemptions for those from states and Canadian provinces that don’t have sales tax. To help make higher education more affordable, Giammarese proposes charging more to out-of-state and foreign students.
District 34 includes Vashon, West Seattle and parts of Burien.
