The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded 12 tribal housing organizations in Washington State more than $15 million for affordable housing as part of a block grant to 146 tribes in 25 states around the nation.
The money is intended for low-income families living on Indian reservations or in other American Indian communities.
The funds may be used for housing development, assistance to housing developed under the Indian Housing Program, housing services to eligible families and individuals, crime prevention and safety, and model activities that provide creative approaches to solving affordable housing problems.
The Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA) initiated the block grant approach to housing.
In Washington, the grant recipients are Chehalis Tribal Housing Authority, Colville Housing Authority, Cowlitz Tribal Housing Authority, Hoh Indian Tribe, Jamestown S. Klallam Tribe, Lummi Housing Authority, Muckleshoot Housing Authority, Nooksack Tribe, Quileute Housing Authority, Skokomish Tribe, Suquamish Tribe and Upper Skagit Tribe.
