The mother of First Nations woodcarver John T. Williams agreed to a $1.5 million settlement in the police shooting death of her son.
Ida Edwards, 78, will receive $250,000 from the City of Seattle, said the family's attorney, Tim Ford. Another $1.25 million will go into a court holding account in the event the 50-year-old Williams left behind any children.
To date, none have come forward, Ford said. If Williams had no children, the entire settlement will go to Edwards, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
The settlement closes wrongful death, civil rights and other claims the family raised after Seattle Officer Ian Birk shot and killed Williams on Aug. 30, 2010, as he was walking in downtown Seattle.
The Seattle Police Department's Firearms Review Board ruled the shooting unjustified in February and Birk resigned. The actual settlement negotiations lasted one day, said Kimberly Mills, a spokesperson with the City Attorney's Office.
"I think once the city knew there was an unjustified shooting, there was a lot of momentum to work with the family toward a just settlement," Mills said.
