Tuesday, April 13, 2:29 p.m., 1400 North Northlake Way. Officer located a male lying across both lanes of traffic at the above location, bleeding from the mouth. The officer radioed the situation to dispatch and was informed of an assault call coming into the 911 center. The call read that a male was beating another male in the middle of the street and the suspect was a white male in his 30s and wearing a gray jacket. Officer contacted the victim and got him out of the roadway. Victim said the suspect assaulted him and fled the scene eastbound. He was bleeding heavily from the mouth and the Seattle Fire Department was called to the scene. Victim said he had been with the suspect earlier at Gas Works Park when the suspect threatened several Park Department employees and was brandishing a large stick with nails in it. The police trespassed the suspect from the park. Victim also stated that the suspect had been bugging him all morning and that the suspect would just ramble and not say much of anything. He asked the suspect several times to be left alone and later the suspect was seen inside the yard of the Northlake Shipyard. Victim was allowed by the owners to sleep in the yard from time to time and did not want the suspect to ruin the privilege by acting belligerent on the property and asked him to leave.
Suspect began to follow victim and talk at him again. Victim again asked to be left alone and suspect came up behind the victim and punched him in the face with a closed fist. The punch knocked the victim to the ground and the assault was in the middle of the roadway. Victim had earlier purchased some beer and the suspect grabbed the beer and fled.
When officers responded to the scene, they located the suspect 300 feet to the west on the Burke Gilman Trail. He was drinking one of the stolen beers and was detained. The victim walked over for in-field show-up identification and positively identified the correct suspect. Suspect was taken into custody and read his Miranda warnings.
