Imagine riding the buses all night for lack of a place to lay your head.
That's what Michael did, day in and day out for nearly two years. And as you can imagine, it wasn't easy: "I couldn't get my proper rest. I was always late for things and always sleeping during the daytime."
Tired or not, Michael sold Real Change during the day to make ends meet, gained turf privileges at the Safeway on 15th and John, and built a loyal clientele in the process. And somehow, through all of it, he maintained his warm smile and sense of humor.
Now, after two years of living that life, he's moved into a place with his girlfriend and daughter. Living indoors and being with family, he finally has a home, and the stability that comes with it. Because after all, having a home isn't just about having a roof over your head.
"It's a beautiful thing," he says. "I appreciate it a lot more. [Because] once you lose something, you realize that you didn't appreciate it enough."
You can still find Michael selling the paper at the Capitol Hill Safeway from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., so be sure to show him your support. 'Cause we all know that rent ain't cheap.
To his customers, he says, "Keep me in business because I love selling Real Change. And when you see me, get your Real Change paper!"
